BBright and Hexalia, two companies within Hexaglobe Group, are accelerating their investment in Media eXchange Layer (MXL) technologies, with the objective of making artificial intelligence easier to integrate into professional media infrastructures.
The brands have launched MXL-IA, a collaborative research and development project supported by the French CNC. The project combines BBright’s expertise in ST 2110, playout and real-time media processing with Hexalia’s AI building blocks for video, audio and metadata analysis.
MXL-IA will notably investigate how AI models, commonly designed around 8-bit RGB data, can operate efficiently within broadcast environments based on 10-bit YCbCr 4:2:2 video. The programme also covers real-time GPU processing, metadata-driven AI workflows, model orchestration and the preservation of human editorial control.
“AI creates real value when it can be deployed as part of an end-to-end media workflow rather than as an isolated experiment,” added Pierre-Alexandre Entraygues, founder and CTO of Hexalia. “By combining MXL with our expertise in cloud, data and media intelligence, we can make AI services easier to integrate, replace and scale across production and distribution environments.”
During IBC 2026, BBright’s technical paper “MXL as an Interoperability Boundary Between Artificial Intelligence and Broadcast Infrastructures,” was selected for a presentation as part of the Technical Papers Programme. The paper examines how MXL can provide a clear interoperability boundary between SMPTE ST 2110 broadcast infrastructures and containerised AI services. It addresses practical challenges such as latency, synchronisation, media format conversion, metadata exchange and the integration of GPU-based processing into deterministic live workflows.
“The industry does not need another closed AI appliance. It needs a standardised way to introduce AI functions into existing broadcast infrastructures without compromising timing, quality or operational reliability,” said Guillaume Arthuis, Founder and Managing Director of BBright. “We see MXL as the missing interoperability layer between professional media systems and a rapidly evolving AI ecosystem.”
Through these initiatives, Hexaglobe Group is positioning MXL as a foundation for modular, interoperable and AI-ready media architectures, spanning on-premises broadcast facilities, remote compute resources and public cloud infrastructures.
